The Ed Abides: A Fresh Batch of Edisms

I can neither confirm nor deny that this is a picture of The Ed. But there is a chance that this is what he looks like. There is also a chance that this is some random dude who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, I can't be sure.

The Ed

Sometimes there's a man, I won't say a hero, cause what's a hero? But sometimes there's a man. And I'm talkin' about The Ed here--sometimes there's a man who, well, he's the man for his time and place, he fits right in there--and that's The Ed, in Las Vegas. Sometimes there's a man, sometimes there's a man who--Well, I lost my train of thought here, but aw hell, I've done introduced him enough...

Okay, so I haven't posted any new Edisms in awhile, but I've saved up quite a bit of them, and figured that in these dark and troubled times as the NFL season is just about over and the specter of a long horible offseason is before us, well, I figured we could use a little Ed wisdom.

The last time Vertically Striped Socks did a story on Ed (or "The Ed" as he is often known) was back in May of 2009. If you missed that story, and need a little bit of background on this interesting man from Vegas, you can read that story here:

If you're up to speed on The Ed, then you know what you're in for. So without further ado, I present to you another batch of Edisms, fresh and piping hot from the oven for all you kids...

This one pretty much sums up The Ed's philosophy on life:

"As long as I know what I’m sayin’, It don’t matter what I’m talkin’ about."

The Ed is a huge Colts fan, here are some of his recent Indianapolis related thoughts...

"The Colts gonna win it all, man. Listen. It’s a forgiven conclusion." "The Colts defense is a lot better now that we got rid of that god dang devil, Tony Dungy, trying to run it."

"You gotta feel sad for the Colts cause for some unknown reason these people still think that Tom Brady is better than the Peyton Manning. And we all know that's a fabrication of elushinations."

Craig Dodge: "How much longer is Peyton Manning going to play?"
Ed: "He'll play 'til he's 57, probably."

"The destiny is that Peyton Manning is the greatest quarterback of all time, and people, he got to get at least two to verify it. Three will superfy it. And the fourth one he gets will triple dipple try it. And that’s all I’m sayin’."

Yeah, it's safe to say that Ed is convinced that the Colts are going to beat the Saints in Super Bowl XLIV and win it all. He's not even worried about it. Another thing he doesn't even worry about is talking about other people...Here are some more Ed quotes where Ed let's people know the situation in America when it comes to his friends and acquaintances on the Dameshek.com message board.

"First of all, you’re a Veginarian, you don’t even eat no food! You’re always sick, you always got problems, you always busy. I’ve never seen somebody who don’t eat meat who’s busy and always sick. That’s three unbelievable combinations, that’s like a combination platter at Taco Bell, it don’t even make sense."

"This guy makes rhymes that don't even rhyme. I've never seen a poem kid who don't even know how to make nothing rhyme. "

"He had no competition, every entry form we sent back had his name on it. It was a unonimous selection."

"It take me 9 hours a day to update this stuff (FYI, "this stuff" is a wide array of games which Ed runs for the kids on Dameshek.com), and then don’t no one even care about it. They just sign up like God dang munchkins, man."

"You’re like a god dang Canadian Football field. Too many yards, man."

"You cry all the time, man. You’re like 2nd down and 36."

"Him and his Dad went to a Father-Son picnic, and his Dad took a stuffed animal."

"The (message) board is chalk full of haters, all these kids from Haiti."

"Look, this kid knows what he's talking about, Face Ventura. (Ed says as he reads a message from a message boarder with the screen name Face Ventura congratulating Ed for the Colts winning) "Congrats Ed." Now see, that kid knows what he's talkin about, that kid is always on time for school. He'll make sure people got lunches, he'll make sure that people got their clothes ironed and pressed. Every. Single. Time. He don't fool around."

"He afraid to call in, cause he don't even know how to dial a phone, he's so scared. "

"These guys always got, like a, conspiracy theory, Like Number 1-9, when he lose his shoelaces in the mall. He think the guy who's the security guard took em, and I'm like, 'No, he didn't do nothing.' "

"Man, this kid, The Whale (A message boarder with a screen name of The Whale, not an actual whale.), he does a lot of things for that kinda species, you know. He goes out and feeds fishes, and he goes out and buys fish tanks for other cities that don't got em."

"Why do you like hockey so much, what, you got a winter coat of somethin’?" (Ed doesn't understand the appeal of hockey as a sport.)

As much fun as it is to hear Ed talk about other people, some of his best lines come when he's talking about himself:

"This guy has a vendella against me, He’s got to, there’s no other choice about it. I don’t know if it’s somebody that’s jealous of me and my good looks or me and things that happen in America that go down when people got on sweaters."

"I just found a nickel right here on the ground! Ah, I found two of em. Heh, A quarter, A quarter and a nickel. That’s 44 cents!"

"It was a long Stupedulous altitude of different arrays of things for me to do."

"I don’t wanna hear no gripin, no cryin, no airplane flyin."

"The people talk all kinds of stuff about me and say, “Aw, man, you got pillows on both sides of your bed.” And all this stuff like that."

"Santa Claus got Rudolph and Donner and Blitzen and Mary Jo, all the reindeer. I don’t got those."

"They afraid to say it to my face, that’s why they don’t call in. They probably think they’ll catch a cold when they talk to me, cuz I’m sick, but I’m not gonna contagious em."

"These guys always get mad when I'm right, and they know that I'm always right. I'm usually right over 100% of the time."

Then of course, there are the times when I have no idea what Ed is talking about...sometimes those are some of The Ed's best moments:

Ed: "I’m super deluxe mad at this point."
Mike Dell: "Why are you so mad, though, The Ed? It’s just competition, you know, what’s wrong?"
Ed: "No No No No, there’s no competition when I’m the champ. Listen, They already know that I’ve set, I’ve set the pattern for this whole rotation of the earth and then they go around and act like that they run a Taco Bell or some stuff like that, you know? They act like light sockets don’t even got switches on em, you know? That’s how they act, sometimes."

"You don't know what the heck go on in the Philippines, I don't, You don't, People who run airlines, and people who make stop signs don't."

"No one knows what can happen, you know, it's like going down a one-way street three different directions. It's uncharted territory."

"System needs Defragipitation. That’s what it say on my computer."

"Sometimes if you get a black pen and you try to write in blue ink, it don’t always work."

"It's all in the scheme of things, man, in America. When you look in the sky and you turn it to the degrees of the what you want it to be, that's what happens."

Yup, The Ed Abides. I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there, the Ed, takin' 'er easy for all us sinners.

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 30: Signs of the End of the World or Come See my Ecstasy Collection!

Twas the show before Christmas...

Yeah, I'm not going to make the show recap a corny Christmas poem. The Ed dropped in to say hello to the show and spread his knowledge about sports in general as well as give some updates on the Dameshek.com Convention and give us a preview of the 2010 edition of the Ed Times...which will apparently have a self-ignition switch so that it will start reading itself. That Ed is always innovating!

Face Ventura and The Whale, my two most loyal callers, chimed in to help me discuss my Magnificent 7 list which was a recap of Seven signs that our world is going to the dogs as seen from a hockey game at the Pepsi Center.

We also had some good conversations about a wide variety of sports related topics and I shared my hope to win the semi-Final of the Dameshek.com fantasy league against Jerry Fairish so that I can change his avatar.

The Vertically Striped Music Recommendation was "In Rainbows" by Radiohead, and the song I played was "Jigsaw Falling into Place."

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 29: The Ed's Press Conference and the Winter Doldrums.

This episode was dominated by the Ed who has announced that he is quitting the Dameshek.com message board because of people talking bad about him. He also talked about finding the mysterious Ted Willer.

While this was far from the best effort out of Vertically Striped Radio it's maybe worth listening to this one for the Ed, and for the fantastic rap song from sports figures freaking out at various press events. I also played a phone call that I made to the Nestle Crunch hotline, which you can call and enjoy if you like by dialing 1-800-295-0051. Thanks to The Ed, The Whale, and Face Ventura for helping me through this Winter Doldrums edition of Vertically Striped Radio.

The Vertically Striped Music Recommendation was "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" by Phoenix.

Let me close by saying, "Don't quit, The Ed."

A great work of fiction from the talented Ed Miller.

Vertically Striped Socks is proud to present a short story by The Ed. The Ed is a a one of a kind individual from Las Vegas, Nevada. He is also one heck of a wordsmith. If you'd like to read more about him, you can read this story I posted about him back in May. I have presented his story without editing, as part of the charm of the Ed is his all-caps typing and somewhat creative spelling techniques. Enjoy the story!

The Ed 2

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 21: The Ed fixes college football, Magnificent 7 Beers, and the Colorado Coalfield War

Episode 21 was a beauty! We unveiled the Magnificent 7 top Vertically Striped approved Beer list in honor of the Beer thread on dameshek.com because let's face, Beer rules.

The Ed dropped in and gave his medicine for college football. We were going to ask him about the lady that cooks his food, but BlogTalk freaked out and hung up on everyone...keep listening when that happens, as we get back on in a minute or two. Just BlogTalk being BlogTalk.

I also dropped a little knowledge on the audience that I picked up this week about a dark time in the history of Colorado known as the Ludlow Massacre. (It's a pretty nutty story, hard to believe it happened in the United States.)

Of course, We talked a bit about our Denver Broncos, MJ was on hand to give his take on the Broncos as well as their so ugly they're beautiful retro uniforms.

The Vertically Striped Music Recommendation was Modest Mouse's "We were dead before the ship even sank."

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 18: Fantasy Comedy Draft

Today was the monumental Fantasy Comedy Draft on Vertically Striped Radio, that's right, we had 7 guys on the phone all at the same time, and we were drafting funny people to make up fantasy teams of funny people to compete in a contest where votes determine the winner. You say, "What a waste of time." I say, "Visionary new way to select the president of the United States."

Either way, I think the audio was mostly entertaining, it involved the seven of us picking our comedians, the Ed singing songs, MJ drafting himself (Oh yes, he did!), and a bunch of other randomness including the seven of us "autodrafting" for the one guy who signed up to play and then didn't show up.

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 17: Setting the draft order and Electronic Cigarettes

On the day before the NFL season gets going and before Craig flies out to Seattle for a vacation, Vertically Striped Radio was without MJ, as he had a lunch date with his parents. We pressed on with just Craig, and it was at times brutal. Fortunately, The Ed called in as did Face Ventura right as Craig was about to bag it.

The draft order was set for next Saturday's "Fantasy Comedy Draft." Somehow MJ got the first overall pick.

It wasn't always pretty, but somehow we got through. Next week should be much better. Many thanks to Face and Ed for making it bearable.

As always, you can listen below or listen to the podcast at www.blogtalkradio.com/verticallystripedradio

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 16: No Shirt, No Thumbs, No Service and Pink Plastic Flamingos

Vertically Striped Radio's 16th episode is in the can, and it was a beaut! MJ and I shared our greatest and worst moments as sports fans, and we had a discussion about ESPN and how much power should they exert. The Ed called in and talked a little constitutional law and he also accused Craig of being overly politically correct and ruining America. (To be fair, I don't think he holds me personally responsible.) He also gave Craig an assignment to create more music videos and even got Craig a little riled up about little leagues that don't keep score. The Vertically Striped Music Recommendation was Echo Echo by Carbon Leaf.

As always, you can listen to the show below or you can download the podcast at www.blogtalkradio.com/verticallystripedradio. Or you can even sign up to get the podcast on iTunes!

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 8: The Sockie Awards Presentation plus The Ed and The Whale.

Craig presented the "Sockie" awards. The Ed was on hand to make his acceptance speech on behalf of "The Ed Show." We also honored the great Joe Sakic, and The Whale called in and offered his always welcome insights as Ed, the Whale and Craig broke down the Magnificent 7 reasons why the 80's are vastly overrated.

The Vertically Striped Music recommendation of the week was "Evil Urges" by the band My Morning Jacket.

This was probably one of our best shows, which may be damning with faint praise, but I enjoyed doing it. You can check it out by listening on the widget below, or you can download it over at www.blogtalkradio.com/verticallystripedradio

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 7: "The Sockie Award" nominations plus the Raiders' Soul Plane

We had quite the show, Craig took calls from The Ed, The Whale, and a guy in Springfield, Illinois none too pleased with holidays.

The Onion provided a bit of reporting, and Craig discussed AirAsia's new Oakland Raiders plane.

The highlight of the show was when The Vertically Striped Academy of Arts, Sciences, and other Neato Stuff unveiled the nominees for the 1st annual "Sockie" awards for such important categories as: Best Holiday, Sports Team of the Year, Best Color, Best Radio Show, and Best Picture (that I have actually seen this year.)

Best Dameshek Amalgamated Messageboard Network radio show is actually a "People's Choice" with the voting on dameshek.com for anyone who is interested in casting their vote. Quite a fun show, I recommend it as highly as the host of a show can recommend someone listening to his own show.

The widget below should work to get you the show, or you can always hear it by going to www.blogtalkradio.com/verticallystripedradio which is the home to Vertically Striped Radio. Check it out!

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 1 - Now playing on a computer near you.

Okay, so the Vertically Striped Socks brand is branching out. I have stepped outside my comfort zone of writing, and have decided to go multi-platform. That's right, I have started my very own Radio Program. It's mostly sports talk, but it may venture into all sorts of other goofiness.

The first episode is in the can, I was surprised at how much more difficult it is to produce a radio program than it is to listen to one. I feel like I did okay, and it was fun to have a creative challenge. You never realize how hard it is to monologue until you try it, very awkward feeling, but when I went back and listened to it, it really wasn't that bad. I'm no Howard Stern, of course, but it wasn't awful.

My first show I spent talking about the NBA Playoffs, then I got a call from The Whale off of the Dameshek.com message board, and then I spent a ton of time talking to The Ed, who is fantastic radio, and he really carried the program along to another level. It's much more fun to talk to people than it is to try to just blab on my yourself. My brother Bruce is planning to join me shortly as my co-host, which I welcome, but it's a lot of fun doing the radio program. If you'd like to take a listen to the first episode, you can listen in or download the MP3 file at www.blogtalkradio.com/VerticallyStripedRadio. Or you can also just listen to it now by simply pressing play on the box below! See how easy I make it for you?
Hope you enjoy it! There will be more to come.

The One, The Only, The Ed!

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyy Everybody!
The Ed
(This is merely one artist's rendition of Ed, no known internet photos have surfaced as of the date I posted this article)

In the deserts of Nevada you can find him. In the oasis town of Las Vegas he makes his home flitting between his three major hubs: The Casinos where he wagers on his games, the fast food joints where he obtains his sustenance, and the Wal-Marts where he finds his football men. A fifty-five year old black man who has decided that he is going to start aging in reverse (He is going to start subtracting a year from his age each birthday from now on, so on his next birthday he will be 54, the following year he will be 53, etc. He hopes to make it back to 45.)

His name is Ed Miller. (Big E, little bitty D, Big M and then i-l-l-e-r, if you need to know how to spell it, Ed style) However to a host of fans he is know simply as, “The Ed.” His charm is undeniable, even if his methods are somewhat less than politically correct. He’ll tell you how it is, and you’ll believe him. Partly because what he says makes sense, and partly just because you can’t help but like the guy. He definitely moves to the beat of his own drum, and his grip on reality as a whole can at time be somewhat tenuous, but he’s a pretty good guy at heart, and if you listen to him for any amount of time, chances are you’ll appreciate his brand of wisdom and knowledge.
He can turn a phrase like no one else in recorded history, and the things that come out of his mouth can be both nonsensical as well as deeply profound, often times simultaneously. He’s not a philosopher. He lives life as it comes to him, but I find it impossible that you would listen to him talk for very long without at least being intrigued.

I first encountered The Ed on Dave Dameshek’s podcast on page 2 of ESPN.com, since then, he has launched (with a lot of help from Mike Dell, the editor in chief over at LCSHockey.com) his own show on BlogTalkRadio.com and his own website at theedssuperdeluxewebsite.com. He also has a large presence at the Dave Dameshek message board over at dameshek.com. His screen name is “Pey Pey 23” and he leaves his fantastic insights all the time “on that message thing.” Although his spelling doesn’t always jive completely with Merriam-Webster (he spells the name Brittany B-R-E-E-T-O-N-J-Y) you pretty much always get what he's after. I have talked to him on just a couple of occasions on his show, and he’s definitely a good guy.
Occasionally he slightly alters actual words or names and creates his own unique words and phrases. Swine Flu quickly became Spine Flu, the economic downturn is now a 'repression', Ben Roethlisberger is Benlisberger, and Kobe Bryant turned in Cody Ryan. Ed, who is a big Indianapolis Colts fan, is convinced that former head coach Tony Dungy was a terrible coach who never had his headset connected.

There is no way for me to fully explain the Ed, you have to experience him for yourself, but I am going to include quite a lengthy list of quotes from him to give you a taste. These are quotes that I have gleaned listening to his show in podcast form over the past few months, but he is good for a quote like this every five minutes or so. I would try to give context for these quotes, but I’m not sure that it would make a lick of difference, because the non sequitur nature of the Ed renders most context irrelevant. Just read them, and if you like what you read, I guarantee it’s better when it comes out of Ed’s mouth directly. If you’re interested in hearing more, Ed’s show airs at www.BlogTalkRadio.com/lcs every Thursday night 10:00 PM Eastern Time (9:00 PM Central, 8:00 Mountain, and 7:00 Pacific) Be forewarned, that his show is probably not entirely appropriate for kids, but you can make that decision for yourself, I’m just putting this out there into the universe, do with it as you will. But I now present…Edisms:
"It's like a pirate that eats sunshine, it don't make no sense!"

"People can't be namin their kids crazy names like Air Filter Jenkins‏."

"I gotta get this booger off my finger, hang on. Man this thing is big. It won't even shake off my finger."‏

"I'll punch him in the mouth with an autographed picture of Mohammad Ali"‏

"I got two frying pans and a lunch box, but it don't make no difference.‏ "

A caller named LiJay was causing an echo on Ed's radio program so Ed said, "He done swallowed some kind of transitor system or something."‏

Ed has an idea for a great product. "Diet Soap, wash away the pounds!”‏

"Hold on, I'm about to choke on a nacho chip‏."

"I don't know if you're knowledgeable, but you know a lot of stuff."‏
"You got two sticks and a gun, You cant make biscuits"
"Some kids drove by in a car and threw tacos at me"

"I'd be down there on 3rd base line just get ready and Pow, gone like a lightning slash. I was so fast sometimes they'd give me two runs for stealing home.‏"
"You want a poke in the eye with a stick?"
"For Breakfast I have... 2 eggs... 2 pieces bacon... 2 cookies and a coke"

"Whoever's doing good at the baseball game sucks at the homerun derby and whoever's doing good at the homerun derby sucks at the baseball game, It's kind of a weird trynamic.‏"

"That guy is shadier than Pimento Loaf.‏"

"Anybody calls in and gives me an update I'm gonna mash em in the mouth with like a stop sign or something.‏"

"Just a bunch of nonsense trash in a basket.‏"

"My heart's racing like a turnpike in a buttlenut."‏

"Patrick Roy was a better goalie than Martin Landau.‏"

"Can you believe it? That's all just stuck in my head like a monkey's nuts.‏"

Singing his own version of Steve Miller Band – “I want to fly like an eagle, wearing jeans.”‏

"That dog is a big ole monkey dog, man. It's HUGE!"‏

Dick Banks, a musician who helped record and produce many of Ed’s songs. "He has a piano on a stick.‏"

"Dave owes me a six pack of barbeque lotion.‏"

"If I see you, I'm just gonna tackle you, man.‏"

"You can't get superstars of the millennium at just the break of a dime." (Referring to getting Texas Tech coach Pat Knight for Dave Dameshek's show)‏

"I'm going to annomalate you.‏ You're going to get annomolated, and that's how it's going to be.‏"

"I got a toothache in my stomach.‏"

“you have never reely lived until you see a body rikoshay off of you winsheeld...‏” – Ed posted this on Dameshek.com…it’s probably better if you don’t ask

"Don't be calling in trying to win prizes cuz I give real prizes on my show and cash and trips for two to Guam and everything!"

"It's scared me to death, man, like a pickelloaf sandwich on some hot bread, it don't matter."

"She's hot like some hot chocolate and some pudding wafers, I'm telling ya."

"You beat lijay, but a monkey and two bricks coulda done that."

"It ain't good Good Friday, cuz that already passed right before Easter, but it's still an Alright Friday. It's alright Friday, I guess."

I also thought I’d include these three bits of conversations that happened on various podcasts, because they cracked me up…

(On Dameshek on Demand)
Skylar The Sass (on Dave Dameshek’s podcast): “Hey, what’s up the Ed?”

Ed: Not too much, man. Just thinking about what I’m doing, you know, cuz sometimes I gotta get it done and you know, I gotta make sure people have it all cuz if they don’t ain’t nobody gonna have nothin.

(On the Ed Show)
Ed: We drivin in a construction zone right now.
Mike Dell: Well, be careful, the Ed
Ed: There’s flashing lights and people jumpin around… This guy got a hammer and a butcher knife.
Mike Dell: Now why does he have a butcher knife, the Ed?
Ed: I don’t know, he’s a construction worker.
Mike Dell: Oh, well then that makes sense.
