New and Improved: Detroit Lions

I love sports logos and uniforms, possibly even more than I love sports, which is weird. One of my favorite events is when sports teams change their logos and or uniforms, which makes me feel like a little kid on Christmas Eve right now as several NFL teams are about to announce some uniform or logo changes. This group of new and improved teams is rumored to include the 49ers, Jaguars and Dolphins. One team that has not officially announced their change is that group of lovable losers from Detroit known as the Lions. Yes, apparently the Lions versus Packers game I atteneded in Green Bay last December where Detroit put the finishing touches on the first 0-16 season in NFL history is apparently historic for two reasons. Firstly, because it was the first time a team finished a sixteen game season without a win, and secondly because it was apparently the final time that the Lions will wear that logo on their helmets.

The Lions haven't OFFICIALLY announced their new logo, but an item on the NFL shop was prematurely listed for sale with the new logo, and since that happened a ton of new information and pictures have slipped out over the internets, so basically it has been leaked. Here is the photo of the new logo (on the left) juxtaposed with the old logo (On the right)...

My opinion is that the Lions hit a home run with this change. Their old logo definitely needed an update, but it also had a classic look to it that shouldn't have been totally scrapped. This new logo keeps the spirit of the old logo, but makes it better, always a plus in my book. Plus it looks more like a Lion now to me, if that makes sense. Since I'm such a sports logo nerd, I was reading up on the Detroit Free Press website (That newspaper has one of the coolest domain names EVER...Freep.com) about the new logo, and also reading fans' opinions of the new look. As I was reading people's opinions, I came across this opinion which brought me to tears with laughter...

o wow. that new logo is really misleading. at first it just seems like a bunch of lines on the old logo but his mouth has now turnt into the legs and right above the legs is his smaller head. I just noticed that today after seeing a close up of the image. pretty nice. not bad. its kinda an optical illusion though. i wonder if its just me or a lot of people are confused. look closely. ya there needs to be more of a neck. no separation between the legs and the head really hurt it. hopefully this is just rough although i doubt it

I can't be certain, but I'm guessing immahustlababy90 isn't a rocket scientist, neurosurgeon, or even a rocket surgeon. Now, I'm not one to openly mock others...(Okay, yes I am) But, SERIOUSLY? This guy mistook the legs on the old logo for the lion's mouth? That would make the little dot the eye, apparently. I can sort of see what this guy was seeing if I try to look REALLY hard, but I am stunned that this guy has gone this long thinking that was the correct interpretation of the logo and he continued to miss the rather straightforward Lion outline. Somehow he instead saw some sort of awkward mentally handicapped Lion with a beaufont hairdo and no front legs.

The Lions logo has been the same without any changes or updates for my entire life. So this mental giant has had a long time to interpret the logo the correctly, and yet he has never been able to see that the legs were not the mouth. Not only that, but he also created the word "turnt" which I suppose is how you write the word "turned" in Stupid. So immahustlababy90, I salute you. In a world of stupid people, your level of idiocy rose above the common moron to achieve a special place in the Stupid Hall of Fame. I'm sorry, but his post was just too good, and I had to share...

Making a Pilgrimage to the Football Mecca...

As a sports fan, there are certain stadiums and/or events that you want to get to at some point in your life. In fact, that may be a post that I create here sometime of places and things you REALLY need to see if you're a sports fan...If you are an NFL fan, as I most certainly am, generally at or near the top of that list is Lambeau Field for a Green Bay Packers game. The history, the fact that the whole town is just barely over 100,000 in population yet they support an NFL franchise, the Ice Bowl, the green and yellow uniforms, the fact that it is the only publicly held sports franchise in America, the statue of Vince Lombardi, the fact that football just FEELS more important there...it's an enticing package.

Well, I was able to convince my lovely wife that a pilgrimage to Green Bay, Wisconsin in late December was a good idea. Despite the fact that the high temperature forecast was 27 degrees, and that there was a 50% chance of snow, she willingly piled into the car at 7:15 AM this morning at her mother's house in the Chicago suburbs and trekked the 215 miles north to one of the colder places on earth. Amazingly, there were tickets available on Ticketmaster, which I could NOT believe. Even though the Packers were eliminated from playoff contention some weeks ago, I was always lead to believe that getting a ticket to a Packers game was about as easy as finding a golden ticket to the Wonka factory. Apparently, if the Packers are 5-10 going into the final game of the year and playing a winless team, it's not as difficult.

Wisconsin was very cold, but I've sat through colder Broncos games in Denver, and I was prepared with very warm clothes. Lambeau was awesome, as advertised, (If you have the means, I highly recommend it) and I had the bonus of being able to witness history being made, as the Lions put the finishing touches on their historically awful 0-16 season. All in all, it was a very fun day, and despite the fact that I had to travel in a car for about 7 hours today in order to make it happen, it was still TOTALLY worth it. Check that one off my bucket list!

Only a very understanding and awesome wife would agree to travel with you to a place as cold as Green Bay in December. This is just such a wife. Guys, if you find one like this who is willing to put up with your stupidity...grab on and NEVER let go!

I found something admirable and pitiable about the way this Lions fan was bravely sitting in the bitter cold in Wisconsin with his hard hat on backwards to endure the final humiliation in a winless season. There is loyalty, and then there is this kind of loyalty with pretty much zero upside, it's kind of inspiring and yet also sad.

This just in...the Lions are not very good.

However, Lambeau Field is truly a national treasure.
